I attended two Spoken Word events at Rouge lounge prior to stepping up on stage myself. I observed how confident many of the poets were, and I felt intimidated. On December 9th, the day of the weekly event, I told myself I would go up and try it out. I spent the whole day rehearsing and when the time came I waited for more than an hour until my name was called. I could feel my heart racing and my palms sweating profusely when I heard the words, “now we have a poet named Jorge coming to the stage.” I walked towards the stage hesitantly and with fear pasted on my face. I looked out at the crowd and with a nervous voice presented the introduction I had prepared in advance.
And then… I don’t know what came over me, but the words came out of my mouth without much effort. They flowed through my tongue and my lips like honey and I knew this is where I belong.
