Have you ever woken up in the morning and wished you could stay in bed? Some days just feel like a cloud is following you around. Are you easily angered? You may be having a good day and then all of a sudden someone says something or does something and your temperature rises.
Most would say that they don’t like these feelings. Most would say they would prefer to be in a good mood, but if they’re completely honest, they’d realize that they benefit from a state of sadness or anger. Sadness receives sympathy from others. Anger receives attention. The problem arises when this becomes your default setting. The more you allow yourself to be negative in your thoughts and emotions, the harder it becomes to shift away from that.
If you’re feeling down or if you’re feeling tense, put your hand over your heart and focus on your breathing. Can you feel your heartbeat? Can you feel your lungs expand and deflate? Do this for two minutes and it will help you shift your mood.
Another technique is to quickly change your body posture. If you naturally slouch, stand up straight. If your lips automatically crease downwards, change it to a smile. If your head usually faces the floor, raise your chin up.
Visualization techniques are also helpful. Close your eyes and imagine getting a phone call from a close friend. You can hear the excitement in his/her voice. They tell you the best news you’ve ever heard. You start jumping and shouting with joy. Can you feel the excitement?
The truth is, you can choose your emotions. So take back your power. Your health, relationships and future outlook will drastically improve if you learn how to control your emotions.
